\u201cWell ladies, have you heard the news?\u201d Magic asked as she trotted over to the group

\u201c And what new would that be, lassie?\u201d Crystal asked as barely looked up from her grazing.

\u201cApparently the humans will be coming out of box rest next week.\u201d Magic said.

\u201cAuch aye, really!\u201d Crystal dismissed. \u201cThey are lot who seem quite content in their box rest. And to my mind, they should stay there.\u201d

\u201cAnd here I thought you liked to play with the humans,\u201d Magic replied with twinkle in her eye.

Not being one to be left out and with the jubilance of youth, a young voice called out as she ran, \u201cAuntie Magic! Auntie Magic! What\u2019s going on? What\u2019s going on!\u201d

\u201cJune! Calm down and don\u2019t be so bold!\u201d scolded the little girl\u2019s mother, Annie. \u201cSo how did you come about this information?\u201d

\u201cI heard it on radio. Apparently the Prime Minister is letting them out,\u201d Magic told them.

\u201cI wasna aware that they were in!\u201d Crystal scoffed.

\u201cCrystal,\u201d Dora said as she turned around, \u201cjust because our humans weren\u2019t in their box doesn\u2019t mean the rest weren\u2019t. Our humans are sensible.\u201d

\u201cOur humans,\u201d Magic continued, \u201chave been staying here. You know that there are few missing as well. So box rest has been used.\u201d

\u201cI wonder how they have been on box rest?\u201d Annie asked.

\u201cMummy, what\u2019s box rest?\u201d June asked.

\u201cThat\u2019s when you have to stay in your stable and be a good girl. Obviously the humans haven\u2019t been good,\u201d Annie explained.

\u201cI\u2019ve heard that there has been a \u2026 pandemic, and that\u2019s why they are one box rest,\u201d Magic said.

\u201cDon\u2019t be blaming me,\u201d Dora declared.

\u201cI said ‘demic’ not ‘Dora’, Pandora. Please stay with the conversation,\u201d Magic admonished.

\u201cSo is this \u2018demic like what? Colic?\u201d Crystal asked.

\u201cNo, I think it is like\u2026,\u201d Magic looked around carefully before whispering, \u201claminitis.\u201d

The mares pulled back in horror and quickly looked to check on Dottie. \u201cHow can you say such a thing when she is so close by?\u201d squeaked Molly quietly, her broad American accent hushed with anxiety.

\u201cBut it must be true,\u201d Annie whispered back. \u201cThey\u2019ve been gone for so long! June, do not say a word,\u201d Annie admonished.

\u201cBut what is…\u201d the child asked.
\u201cIt\u2019s the curse,\u201d Pandora told her with wide eyes. \u201cIt kills people.\u201d

\u201cBut Grandma Dottie is alive,\u201d said June confused.

\u201cOnly because our humans care so much. Don\u2019t be bringing it up because it worries her so,\u201d Crystal told June. \u201cNow you be a good girl and go play with Callie and Rosie.\u201d

The mares watched as the filly trotted off happily to play with her friends who were now smaller than she was. \u201cThat child is growing like a weed, Annie. You\u2019ve done well,\u201d Magic said with a smile.

\u201cShe\u2019s a handful. Simon is trying to teach her to walk like a lady and she\u2019s having no part of it. Callie and Rosie are as bad as each other. She is such a bold girl. I\u2019d hope that she would settle soon.\u201d Annie slowly shook her head.

\u201cJune is young yet \u2013 not even a yearling. She will learn,\u201d Molly told her confidently. \u201cAnd they\u2019re letting y\u2019all keep her. Not many mommies get that!\u201d

\u201cBut for how long?\u201d Annie asked warily.

\u201cIf it\u2019s Kimberly, then forever. I can tell you, she\u2019s like that,\u201d Magic told the nervous mother. \u201cFor that matter, as long as June is here, you will be as well. Kimberly I don\u2019t think likes to break up a family. She still has her colts and they\u2019re well into their years.\u201d The mares all agreed and began a promenade around the field.

\u201cHow do you think the box rest has affect them?\u201d Molly suddenly asked. \u201cWill they be unfit?\u201d

\u201cCan\u2019t see how that could be since they keep escaping their boxes,\u201d Stanley said as he popped he head through the hedge. \u201cHi Molly!\u201d

\u201cHi Stan,\u201d Molly blushed.

\u201cVery true, young man,\u201d Magic replied. \u201cAnd where is Mr Charlie?\u201d

\u201cHe\u2019s around,\u201d Stan told the Alpha Mare. \u201cI think they need a salt lick. That would keep them home.\u201d

\u201cOr a treat ball,\u201d came a deep voice with a touch of a French accent from the hedge.

\u201cI\u2019d love a treat ball!\u201d declared Pasha excitedly.

\u201cPash, if it\u2019s food, you are all for it,\u201d teased Henry.

\u201cGrooms are my favourite food,\u201d Tango said with a smirk.

\u201cTango, Grooms are not food,\u201d Charlie told him sternly.

\u201cI don\u2019t think treat balls are the answer, Charlie. I think the humans need better grooms,\u201d Magic told him. \u201cOur grooms are very watchful and careful about us. I am glad they care for us so deeply.\u201d

\u201cIt is a shame that humans don\u2019t have them,\u201d Charlie agreed. \u201cThey are walking all over our paths with not a clue or a reason. They just wander here and there and everywhere. I wish we had a way of contacting their Handlers.\u201d

\u201cOh dear!\u201d Pandora cried. \u201cI wonder if our Handers have been on the dreaded box rest, too!\u201d

\u201cOur Handers are too smart to be put on Box Rest,\u201d Ben declared.

\u201cAye,\u201d Crystal said. \u201cThey must all be getting ready for their H-Levels.\u201d

\u201cIt is spring and H-Levels happen like clock-work,\u201d Pandora agreed.

\u201cH-Levels?\u201d asked a confused Molly.

\u201cHoof levels,\u201d Henry explained. \u201cEvery year our Handlers go off and get examined. If they are really good, then they come back as Grooms.\u201d

\u201cIs that like what they do with us?\u201d Annie asked. \u201cDo they give them a jab too?\u201d

\u201cI think so,\u201d said Stan. \u201cThey are always saying how painful it is.\u201d

\u201cCan\u2019t be anything else then,\u201d Magic declared. \u201cMr Charlie, I shall be taking my ladies to the other end of the field. We wish you good day.\u201d

\u201cBon jour, mon cher,\u201d Charlie bade them.

\u201cHow quickly you forget your wife!\u201d Dora scolded in an mean-girl voice.

\u201cNon! Je n’oublierai pas!\u201d he angrily replied. \u201cI will never forget my love! Come lads, let us leave these harpies!\u201d

As the men galloped off following their leader, Magic looked disappointingly at Dora. \u201cYou should not have said that. He will never forget her, nor will he ever stop loving her. That was very rude and you know it.\u201d

\u201cI suppose I should apologise next time I see him,\u201d said Dora realising her gross misstep and remembering her manners. \u201cI think you are right. We need our Handlers and Grooms back. We all need some love.\u201d

\u201cOur humans have been trying,\u201d Molly said.

\u201cAnd they have been doing a good job,\u201d Dora declared.

\u201cI do think that it will be good for them to come out of box rest,\u201d Magic decided. \u201cThose that haven\u2019t been escaping will be a touch unfit. We will need to be careful with them.\u201d

\u201cI do so hate when they fall off,\u201d Bella added.

\u201cGracious!\u201d Annie said as she stepped sideways, \u201cHow long have you been there?\u201d

\u201cLong enough to watch you oogle Charlie, and Molly to flirt with Stan. I watch everything.\u201d

\u201cBut you like to buck them off,\u201d Annie told her.

\u201cI just like my clothes to fit,\u201d Bella told her.

\u201cAmen sister!\u201d Molly agreed as she trotted past the small Shetland.

\u201cBack to the point at hoof,\u201d Magic redirected, \u201care we agreed to careful with the humans this week and next?\u201d The mares agreed and Magic continued, \u201cTheir box rest has been hard on them. Some will not be happy as they may have had someone go over the Rainbow Bridge. If this is case, be extra gentle with them. Some of them will be tired as their yearlings will have been as bad as June \u2013 and we all know how tired Annie is. So be kind to the humans \u2013 no kicking, no biting, no pushing them against the wall.\u201d

\u201cBut what if they want to overly love us?\u201d asked Crystal warily.

\u201cBe glad they are here to do that. Some horses are not so lucky as to have their humans come back.\u201d

As the mares walked back towards the gate, Magic came along side Annie, \u201cSweetie, do you think there is any chance you could get June to stop rolling in the dirt?\u201d

\u201cNot a chance,\u201d Annie told her with a sly smile. \u201cBut it does mean that we could get a bath too\u2026.\u201d
